Course Description CLIL stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning and is geared toward students at the Intermediate and Advanced level of language learning who want to improve their language skills beyond standard grammar courses by studying content-related courses.
CLIL courses use a dual-focused educational approach: professors using the CLIL method teach subjects using a foreign language, and students will improve their practical skills in the target language while learning useful content in the subjects of their choosing.
Courses offered using the CLIL method are available at the Intermediate Level for students with two (2) or more semesters of college-level Italian or by permission of instructor include:

Advanced Italian Grammar & Composition
Each course is 1-month in duration and equivalent to a 4-credit semester language course.
Level Four courses accept students who have attended the second level Intermediate course (B2) or students who have been placed in C1 as a result of the placement exam. Also students who have a CELI 3 (the internationally recognized certificate of Italian language proficiency issued by the Università per Stranieri) or an equivalent Italian Language Certificate issued by institutions similar to the Università, have direct access to the C1 level.
Based on the results of the proficiency test, students will be placed into one of the following courses:
ITAL 401 Advanced Intermediate Italian I – 4 credits (Università level C1.1)
ITAL 402 Advanced Intermediate Italian II – 4 credits (Università level C2.2)
ITAL 403 Advanced Intermediate Italian III – 4 credits (Università level C3.3)
Objectives The objective of the course is to train you to use the language almost effortlessly, in its oral as well as written forms, in a natural and spontaneous manner. You must be able to make yourself easily understood even if the expressions you use are not always correct and accurate. You must have good mastery of a broad lexical repertory in different areas sufficient to allow you to understand specialized articles in newspapers and magazines. In terms of communication, you must be able to choose the most suitable language functions from your repertoire in order to speak and maintain a conversation and be able to express your points of view using a language that is not only appropriate but also efficient for communicative purposes. You must be able to write clear and well-structured texts on both straightforward and complicated topics.
Main Grammar Points covered in Level 4 The program includes a revision of all the grammatical elements of the Italian language (see also the program at level B2), aimed at activating a superior competence of use, suitable for situations that require an advanced knowledge and property of the language. The teaching activity will involve different lexical, usage and context levels (different communicative situations, family, work, social relations, school-university, literary), as well as register (formal or informal situations).

Courses are based on the Common European Framework B2 (advanced-intermediate). All courses are taught entirely in Italian and online with the Università per Stranieri di Perugia supplemented by additional tutorial hours with your assigned ISI Abroad Professor.
Objectives The objective of the course is to allow you to interact with a native speaker without great difficulty in formal and informal situations and to understand the fundamental ideas of complex texts that address concrete and abstract ideas, technical texts and literary texts. You must be able to write clear articles on several topics and express your opinions on current topics, indicating the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Objectives The objective of the course is to create the conditions for you to begin, maintain, and conclude a short and simple conversation face-to-face or over the telephone, to easily understand simple, routine exchanges, to make yourself understood, and to swap ideas and information on familiar topics. Furthermore, you will be able to interact in situations that may arise while traveling around Italy, to describe experiences, dreams, and hopes, to briefly present reasons for and explanations of opinions, projects, and intentions.
Main Grammar Points Covered General review of the main grammatical elements of level A2, in particular simple and articulated prepositions, reflexive verbs, regular and irregular passato prossimo, adverbs of time in the passato prossimo, modal verbs in the passato prossimo, “ci” particle, simple and compound future, possessive adjectives and pronouns. The following topics in depth: imperfect, use of imperfect and passato prossimo, trapassato prossimo, direct imperative, quello/bello, verbs volerci and metterci, direct pronouns, partitive pronoun “ne”, forms ce l’ho – ce n’è, indirect pronouns, combined pronouns, impersonal forms, conditional simple, conditional compound, questions, introduction to the present and past subjunctive, indirect imperative.

Elementary Italian
Each course is 1-month in duration and equivalent to a 4-credit semester language course.
Level One courses are for students with basic or no previous instruction in Italian. Each course is 1-month in duration and equivalent to a 4-credit semester language course. Based on the results of the proficiency test, students will be placed into one of the following courses:
ITAL 101 Elementary Italian I – 4 credits (Università level A2.1)
ITAL 102 Elementary Italian II – 4 credits (Università level A2.2)
ITAL 103 Elementary Italian III – 4 credits (Università level A2.3)
Courses are based on the Common European Framework A2 (beginner). This program is taught entirely in Italian with the majority of the program taught at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia, and 1-2 tutorial hours per week with the ISI Abroad Professors. Students may be placed higher or lower depending on the placement exam results and after consultation with professor.
Prerequisites All beginner students who have not studied Italian before or who have only a vague knowledge of Italian (false beginners) have direct access to the beginner’s course (ITAL 101) without taking an entrance exam.
Objectives The objective of the course is to train you to understand and create frequently used sentences and expressions related to environments of immediate relevance (for example, basic information on people, families, purchases, local geography, study, and work). In addition, you must be capable of communicating in routine situations, providing a simple and appropriate description of their personal experience and environment that refer to immediate needs.
Main Grammar Points covered in A2 Elements of phonetics, spelling rules, gender and number of nouns, determinative article, indeterminative article, adjectives in -a -i -e, verbs being and having, cardinal numbers, present indicative I-II-III: regular verbs, present indicative I-II-III: irregular verbs, modal verbs, reflexive verbs, main interrogative forms, simple prepositions, articulated prepositions, “ci” particle, regular past perfect, irregular past perfect, modal verbs in the past, adverbs of time in the past perfect, simple and compound future, possessive adjectives and pronouns, imperfect, introduction to the use of the imperfect, direct pronouns, introduction to the simple conditional.
Assessment & Grading Final grades will be determined by your ISI Abroad professor and based upon attendance, participation, Universita’ per Stranieri exam grades, and final ISI Abroad exam (reading, writing, listening, speaking).
